BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – Childhood nutrition and obesity continues to be a problem in West Virginia.

In line with State of Childhood Obesity, West Virginia is one of the obese states within the nation.

Mary-Ann Philips, a pediatrician with WVU Medicine, says she has seen obesity affecting youth increasingly. She says about 20% of her patients who’re of their teens are obese and that genetics are a heavy factor.

“I feel it’s necessary to be lively as a family and make healthy changes together,” Philips said. “Specializing in one a part of it, food regimen or exercise doesn’t do it. Now we have to do all of it together. Working together to make healthy changes in your food regimen that can stick long run.”

Philips recommends children to get at the least 60 minutes of exercise a day together with three healthy meals. Meaning getting enough calories and protein but staying away from sugary drinks and snacks.

Overall, Philips says tackling obesity comes right down to lifestyle decisions that aren’t at all times easy.

“Meaning getting on the market moving and getting that heart rate up. I understand it’s hard since it is winter. It’s not as easy not but attempt to do activities across the house like games and things do to together to remain lively,” Philips said.
